The story starts on a rainy evening in Bella Swan's house. She is sitting by the window writing a letter to Charlie Swan while preparing for her next class. Then she hears a noise in the library and leaves to investigate it. She finds Jacob Black, who was the wolf who exposed the secret of her visions, in her house reading one of her books which reminds him about their discussion about vampires and werewolves. After Bella told him that she could see his eyes he left, but he returned to attack her when she goes out to face him. He explains that he came back for revenge after she witnessed his death in New Moon, but stopped short before hurting Bella because she was "so beautiful. ” He then left. Bella went outside to find Edward, but instead she finds a young woman named Victoria who blames Bella for the death of her mate James and vows to make her pay. She tries to kill Bella, but Victoria's companion Laurent decides that this would cause a human-vampire war, and stops her from doing so. Edward comes out from hiding and drives them away from Bella by hurting Victoria's hand.(In the movie it is shown that if a vampire bites an animal, the animal then becomes a vampire.) The Cullens later ask Bella if she was hurt or bitten by either of them, but she assures them that she was not. Bella also heard Edward's voice when she speaks to him mentally, and tells Renee that she hears Edward's voice in her head.Bella and Edward go to the graduation party at Forks High School, where Bella's best friend Alice and her boyfriend Jasper attend, but Bella feels pressured by the humans around them to make a choice between Edward and Jacob. There, she meets Victoria and Laurent again and they kidnap her, but realize their mistake when they learn that the young woman they kidnapped is really Bella. The Cullens arrive in time to save Bella from Victoria's efforts to turn her into a vampire; however, Laurent is killed by Victoria in the process. Edward also tells Bella that he is in love with her. Later, Alice has a vision that Victoria is on her way to Italy to find the Volturi, who might destroy Forks because of the many vampires who reside there. That night, while the gang is on their way to Italy to stop Victoria, Edward tells Bella that he will never leave her side ever again.The next day they reach the Volterra City in Italy. First, they convince Aro of their cause after Edward shows him his true talent by stopping time for just Bella. Then they are allowed to see Caius who tells them that if Bella became a vampire she would have even more powers than Edward does now.
